Introduction
Between November and December 2024, our team at IIACSS conducted a nationwide quantitative survey capturing the opinions of 3,170 Iraqis across all 18 governorates. Among the wide range of social and cultural topics covered, we asked a simple yet revealing question: “Who is your favorite singer?” While 25% of respondents said they do not listen to music, 2,337 did, offering a fascinating glimpse into Iraq’s diverse musical landscape. Though the question may appear light-hearted, it provides meaningful insight into how Iraqis connect with culture. Music often reflects generational values, regional identity, and shifting social dynamics. Understanding who people listen to helps us understand what they relate to, how they see themselves, and what voices they trust in both quiet moments and turbulent times.
